The basic concept of this was to introduce the player to rudimentary platforming with a tutorial stage.
The game gives the player the objective of making it to the basement, not explaining at first that the door is locked. The key is placed in the only other area the player can access to minimize time spent backtracking while secretly getting newer players more used to the type of game they are playing.
This also speeds up the tutorial for anybody who has played this level, as they would already know that they have to obtain the key beforehand.
